Re: Can anyone help me with a 1971 240Z gearbox problem?

Hi The term Porsche style synchro just refers to the type of synchro band in your particular box. Simplistically some cars had metal style bands and others had brass/bronze bands ( or some such material. ) They didn't diagnose this. It just has them. Reversing synchro bands can be done to eek a litt...

Jeff at Precision Engineering has built all my flywheels as well as those for many other Zeds.
He should still have the drawings for both the small one like mine and the one with the full sized ring gear on fingers. If not let me know and we can whip the one off my spare engine for him to copy.

Hi Personally i use a billet small diameter steel flywheel with small diameter ring gear. this enables the use of a gear reduction starter motor, which is sorta essential for starting anything with compression and some ignition advance. I have no experience with any clutch smaller than a 71/4 inch w...

Re: 300zx racecar

I get your wish to keep the coils away from the heat. But this needs to be balanced against the length of the HT lead. I prefer to keep the HT lead as short as possible, mount the coils away from the engine to further reduce heat and vibration. I normally mount them on an alloy plate mounted on rubb...

Re: Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU replica race car build...

Cam Synch sensor is fun. Just a pain to mount and weld. Sensor is a think a Honeywell GT 101 i think. Ill check. Adjustable blade style trigger mounted to cam sprocket. I'm not sure if this is ideal but i cant think of any other way. The obvious down side to this arrangement is that if you change th...

Re: Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU replica race car build...

Hi Grant Yep the coil packs are pretty generic, with the V6 Commodore being one car that uses them. There are after market versions as well as Electromotive items ( who knows who makes their coils ) some have different advertised winding counts. I personally just went with the Electomotive unit as i...

Re: Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU replica race car build...

Hi Grant. Ok. I used to run a locked out distributor ( no vacuum no mechanical ) an MSD 6AL with rev limiter and a single MSD coil. Brutal, effective, went bang, couldnt ask for more at the time. This was a long time ago. Then i changed to an electromotive HPV ( good name ! ) crank fired unit comple...

Re: Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU replica race car build...

Hi Grant. I guess i should clarify the diff mount method. Mine is solid mounted front and rear and into the cage ! If i break a rear diff housing i am in serious trouble ! Im no 280zx expert but if im seeing your photos correctly the front of the diff is mounted to the cross member which in turn is ...

Re: Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU replica race car build...

I just solid mount mine front and rear. The front has big cap screws going up vertically through the eyes / bolt holes on the front of diff into threaded bobins welded into the cage. The rear has a large piece of 90deg angle with two vertical slots that the studs on the diff slide up into. On my car...

Hi Generally speaking a standard Z drive shaft will not stand up to the rigors of racing. Some are better than others having different sized universal joints but none of them are great not to mention they are all old. Contact your nearest ADL branch or reputable manufacturer and have one made. The w...

Hi i assume you may have this issue sorted my now but for future reference the easiest way to get the center bearing cap out is to wind an M8 bolt into the hole in the middle of the cap. Then with the crank in the position shown with a counter weight next to the bearing cap in the up position, place...
